Cybernauts

Cybernauts is an ongoing series of browser-based artworks examining the changing relationship between human beings and technological systems.

Each encounter begins as a conversation between artist James Malzahn and an artificial-intelligence collaborator, then becomes a public webpage shaped through code, interaction, visual design, sound, data, and audience participation.

The browser is not a frame.

The works are not simply displayed online. The browser, phone, network, clock, camera, microphone, database, and visitor may become materials within the artwork.

Some encounters are immediate and self-contained. Others accumulate anonymous participation, remember earlier decisions, or change in response to people who arrived before you.

Authorship

The collaboration does not treat artificial intelligence as an invisible production tool or a replacement for artistic judgment. Its role is made visible as a participant in ideation, interpretation, coding, revision, and critique.

James Malzahn directs, selects, edits, tests, and situates each work within a broader artistic practice concerned with technological power and the conditions under which people are watched, represented, influenced, and controlled.
